Tōtara Canopy

Tōtara Canopy is a software platform to identify and block financial scams targeting individuals, before losses occur. Named for the sheltering canopy created by the mighty Tōtara, our software also creates a protective canopy over all those that use it.

Tōtara Canopy was created when we saw the damage that financial scams were doing to vulnerable members of our society and decided to use our considerable experience in the global financial security sector to do something about it.

The Problem

Fraud Scams are the scourge of our age.  In New Zealand, losses to fraud scams in 2025 were estimated by the Global Anti-Scams Alliance and Netsafe at $3 billion dollars.

The Solution

While Totara Canopy is intent on working with the government and banking industry to decrease New Zealand's overall scam exposure, something needs to be done now at a consumer level. This is where our first product, Protect, a consumer solution to the scam fraud issue comes in.

About the Founder

Damian Matich brings more than 20 years of Fraud and Financial Crime leadership in major banks and vendors across London, New York, Zurich and Sydney. He has delivered multiple firsts in fraud detection, including Online Banking, First Party Fraud, and the UK’s first real-time transaction scoring deployment. He has led programmes which delivered more than $USD 500M in fraud loss savings. He went on to define the global anti-fraud strategy at Credit Suisse and Fraud Analytics globally at NICE Actimize.   Damian is a recognised international speaker and thought leader, and has designed and led multiple commercial research initiatives.  Tōtara Canopy represents the synthesis of this accumulated experience, insight and leadership outcomes.
